A Mw6.9 shallow strike-slip earthquake occurred in southern Qinghai Province, China on April 13, 2010. This area is on the eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau in a region with many faults and a history of damaging earthquakes. The earthquake caused severe damage in the town of Yushu (population 360,000) and over 2600 people were killed.
