Mud Volcano in Sidoarjo, East Java
On December 25-27, we visited the erupting mud volcano in Sidoarjo, which
is located about 30 km south of Surabaya in East Java, Indonesia. This
mud volcano has been producing large quantities of hot water and mud since
the end of May (http://www.spiegel.de/international/spiegel/0,1518,442408,00.html).
The volumes of erupted materials are estimated at about 100,000 cubic meters
per day. This mud volcano has already caused a large amount of damage,
flooding a populated area of about 2 square kilometers and 13,000 people
have been evacuated. There is an large ongoing effort to build dikes around
the area to control the flooding.
